Also, this is “Rachael’s boyfriend”. That’s the only thing we know about him besides that he excels at looming.
The Art of Daniel Krall and Other Things of Interest
So, I’ve been working on a lot of freelance stuff that I’m contractually obliged not to post anywhere yet, and also a really large scale personal project that I want to keep under wraps for the time being…but here are some sweet adventure dudes that I had a whole lot of fun drawing today!
From left to right: guy who takes his lemon tree everywhere, sullen pre-teen ninja, bullet-proof uncle, a champion banjosman, and fanny-pack mechanic.
I’m pretty sure that they hang out and have super-dope adventures together!
These are some character drawings I did a little while back for a project I’m working on! It’s called Doom Cannon, and it’s kind of a riff on teen robot pilot cartoons (Voltron, Evangelion, etc). Like most illustration types, I think character design is one of the best parts of the job. I’ll probably throw a bunch of these up here!
Some early drawings of The Knight character, from Double Fine’s “The Cave”! His cave paintings were probably overall my favorite ones to work on. I imagine he maintains his pallidness through a steady diet of boiled meats and root vegetables, and a climate of the greyest chilly drizzles. Just like me!
Also, here are some early character drawings I did for the Adventurer’s backstory in “The Cave”. I didn’t design the character models for the playable portion of the game itself. I just stylistically retooled the main character riffing off of the super fun existing character models they game me, and then invented secondary and background characters for these “Cave Paintings” you discover along your way through the game that reveal the character’s story. In this case, the Adventurer (lady in the middle) already existed. I came up with the fine fellows flanking her to serve as her adventuring companions! I’ve always been a big Indiana Jones fan and could probably draw explorer/adventurer peeps all day!

These were the final character treatments for the lounge! Green was added to give it a little punch, and they decided to print them big and focus on the simple designs tiled here and there throughout the place and on the swag you could pick up. I would have preferred working with those initial murals more, but I’m still happy with how they turned out!
So, I did a pretty cool gig over this past summer that I never posted! Wired hired me to design treatments for the walls and other areas for their lounge at the 2011 San Diego Comic Con. It’s essentially a chill out area where celebs and other folks grab some cool Wired swag and throw back some drinks in the San Diego sun.
The concept they had was to develop characters based on a set of reader archetypes. A business guy, a gadget girl, a tech-y gentleman, a musician, a hacker, a foodie, and a traveling thrill seeker.
Initially I approached it as a series of murals that would wrap around the walls, the bar, the DJ booth, and a fireplace. The sketches in this post were some early concepts. More to follow!
