These two pieces were my own entries for the Technotwonic exhibition. The theme was bright, colorful, and cute. I got to thinking about how much cute poppy stuff soaks into our lives and how it doesn’t reconcile well with the unavoidable dark murky bits we face from time to time. We’ve got all of this creepy stuff zooming around us all of the time and it’s got to stand side by side with jellybeans and cuddly animals. Typically I think people try to compartmentalize these ideas and deal with the extreme ends on their own terms. These pieces are definitely ridiculous, but to me they’re about looking at it all at once. Everybody feels awkward and gross, perverted and angry, maybe capable of horrible things under unusual circumstances. Also, we like cute rabbits who sing and dance! I’m trying to melt your eyeballs and make your teeth hurt (also trying to creep you out a little).

"Technotwonic" is the 4th show of illustration work that I’ve curated and juried this year with the help of an extremely talented and motivated group of MICA seniors! The theme for this show was: bright, colorful, and cute (to bookend last semester’s b&w Seance show). We had an opening for Technotwonic this past Friday, and it was a terrific success and a really fun time! I love coming up with these things and putting together collections of work that really transform our departmental gallery space into a unique experience. Thanks to everyone who contributed work, and special thanks to the seniors who helped put it all together and make it extra cool.

I’ve been doing characters from A Game of Thrones as fun warm up doodles. I’ll post them one by one (and do more as time allows). Here’s Jon Snow with Ghost. Can’t wait to see the season opener!

ATTENTION WORLD: d. and babs COLLABS!

My dear and lovely friend Babs Tarr of http://www.babsbabsbabs.com and I recently collaborated on this series of fight poses for “Jawbreaker” (who I posted a drawing of a little while back)!

I did some quick digital “pencils”,  trying to just focus on shape, flow, and movement (seen above in pink lines). I asked Babs to try to stick to the poses and content, but not to try to make it look as though I’d done it. Just re-brand it with Babs language.

And MAN, did it turn out to be a fun combo! Is it me-ized Babs? Is it Babs-ized me??? Who can say? All I know is we’ll be doing more of this in the future! Go comic Voltron, GO!

Quick warm-up today, thinking about how satisfying it would be to eat 112 ounces of pudding just beyond the reach of a cannibal corpse.
Carl is no more annoying than any other preteen, pretty good at surviving horrible things, and selfish with his near-death desert rewards. Solid work, Carl!

I’ve assigned a project for my character design class at MICA where students are divided into two “gangs”, given a character name and a randomly selected weapon (alla Battle Royale), and design a character they can use for weekly “brawls” (which are done using a very crude dice rolling damage vs. health based deal). This week’s sample battle was between myself, using “Hell Hand" (pictured above in black, white, and red), and my very talented assistant Bart Browne's character, Nero (in black and grey).

It was pretty close, but Hell Hand won by a hair (probably due to all of the casual stabs)!

You guys should check out Bart’s work! He’s a really hard working dude who’s bound for great things!
